It varies per person on how long it takes to get a Virginia real estate license depending on the pace in which you complete the 60 hours of pre-licensing coursework and pass your licensing examination, the time it takes you to complete the application process, and application and background check processing times.
What kind of information will I learn to help me get a real estate license in Virginia?
All Real Estate Express Courses are approved by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation Real Estate Board. Once completed, you are eligible to sit for the Virginia Real Estate License Exam.
Per Real Estate Express policy, students have six (6) months PER COURSE to complete each course. Your six month completion period begins once you access your course.
The state requires that your course final exam be proctored. You'll need to schedule an appointment with an online proctor in advance. After passing the final course exam you will be required to sign an affidavit to verify your identity as the student who completed the course and the final course exam.

How do I apply for and take the Virginia Salesperson licensing examination?
You may register and schedule for your examination at www.psiexams.com as soon as Real Estate Express has submitted your record to PSI. You may register and schedule for an examination via the Internet 24 hours a day. You will be asked to select the examination and enter the ID# that Real Estate Express has submitted. You must pass both portions to apply for licensure by answering a minimum of 56 questions correctly on the national portion and 30 questions correctly on the state portion of the exam.
The state requires proctoring of your licensing exam. Additional information on the proctoring process can be found here . If you fail one portion of the examination, you must retake that portion and pass. Your completed application must be submitted within one (1) year from the initial examination date when you originally took the examination. If all paperwork and fees are not received within one (1) year from the original examination date, you must retake the expired portion or portions.
How do I submit my fingerprints for the background check?
Before submitting an application for a Virginia real estate license, each applicant must submit a set of fingerprints to the Virginia Central Criminal Records Exchange for the purpose of conducting a state and national fingerprint-based criminal history record. You will be electronically fingerprinted at one of the PSI Virginia sites during regular testing hours. Once fingerprinting is done, the license application must be received by the Board within 45 days of the Board's receipt of the fingerprint results or the applicant will have to pay to be fingerprinted again before a license will be issued.
How do I submit my Virginia Salesperson application?
Your completed application and fee must be received by the Commission within one (1) year of passing the licensing examination. A license cannot be issued until the following are in place:
- All questions are answered
- All documentation + fee attached
- Background check is not older than 45 days
Does Virginia require post-licensing education?
All active new salesperson licensees must complete an approved 30 hours of post-license education within one (1) year from the last day of the month in which the license was issued in order to remain on active status. Failure to complete these 30 hours of post-license education within the one (1) year will result in automatic placement of the license on inactive status. No continuing education is required of new salespersons in their first two-year license term.

Roster Process: Course completions are submitted twice per week on Tuesdays and Fridays. We report completions on Tuesday from the previous Friday through Monday. We report completions on Friday from the previous Tuesday through Thursday.

Does Virginia offer reciprocity?
Applicants for a salesperson license must:
- H old a current salesperson license in another state
- Register by mail or fax and pass the state portion of the licensing examination
- Submit verification of completion of the 60-hour pre-license course
- Submit letters of certification from other jurisdictions where licensed
Licensure certification from other states must be dated less than 60 days from the time the completed application is received. Certifications of licensure are required from all states where the applicant is or has been licensed to practice real estate

Obtaining Certificate of Course Completion: Upon completion of the course, Real Estate Express will provide you an electronic certificate of completion in your account dashboard. Course completion dates are recorded using Central Standard Time, therefore that will be the time reflected on your certificate.
