To keep the public informed, the Cape May County Board of County Commissioners are providing regular updates in government services and pertinent links regarding COVID-19. Coronavirus is a serious illness that spreads from person to person. Cape May County officials are working closely with the State and Federal Government to provide the latest information to help mitigate the spread of this virus.

Commissioner Director Gerald M. Thornton and Commissioner Jeffrey L. Pierson, who oversees the Cape May County Department of Health want to assure everyone that the County is closely monitoring the spread of COVID-19 in Cape May County and throughout the region. Their foremost goal is to protect the well-being of our employees and families as well as our residents and visitors and continue to provide essential services to our County.

County government will continue to operate, and all government functions will be offered with some adjustments including limited hours of operation and reduced services. Communications remain open and the public is encouraged to call or email for needed services or information.

COVID-19 Update Week of 11/5

New COVID-19 cases continue to trend downward in Cape May County. The 30-day average has dropped by more than one-third over the past 30 days. The latest Rate of Transmission (RT) according to covidactnow.org in the County is at .74, which is the lowest since July 6 from this summer. The website also reports that Cape May County has the lowest RT among all counties in New Jersey.

The Cape May County Department of Health administered a total of 22,671 doses so far. The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 75,405 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 59,548 have been fully vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 67% of the County's population is fully vaccinated.

The Cape May County Department of Health is offering booster shots of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Individuals that have received the Moderna vaccine must wait six months before receiving the booster shot. People who have taken the Johnson & Johnson vaccine need to wait two months before getting the booster. The County's DOH will be providing all Moderna, Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccinations, including booster doses, along with Flu shots at the Avalon Community Center every Wednesday from 1 P.M. to 5 P.M, no appointments needed as this is a walk-in clinic. They will also be providing first and second doses via their mobile vaccine clinic weekly as well. This upcoming week, vaccines will be available:

COVID-19 Update Week of 10/29

Cape May County has the third lowest Rate of Transmission (RT) among all counties in New Jersey. The latest RT in County is .86. Anytime the RT is below 1.0 indicates that the spread of COVID-19 is decreasing at this time. Cape May County currently ranks in the top five among New Jersey counties among percentage of fully vaccinated individuals.

The Cape May County Department of Health administered a total of 22,260 doses so far. The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 72,574 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 59,163 have been fully vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 67% of the County's population is fully vaccinated.

COVID-19 Update Week of 10/22

The Rate of Transmission (RT) has dropped in Cape May County week-over-week. When the RT is below 1.0, it can be said that the spread of COVID-19 is decreasing. The RT in the County is at .90, compared to .97 one week ago, according to the website covidactnow.org. This is the lowest the RT has been in Cape May County since July 13 of this year.

The Cape May County Department of Health administered a total of 22,161 doses so far. The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 69,737 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 58,822 have been fully vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 66% of the County's population is fully vaccinated.

COVID-19 Update Week of 10/15

Cape May County continues to maintain one of the highest percentages of vaccinations as new cases continue to trend down. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Cape May County is top five among New Jersey counties for total percentage of residents with at least one dose of the COVID vaccine at 73.2%. The Rate of Transmissions (RT) is currently at .96. Anytime the RT is below 1.0 it can be said the spread of the virus is decreasing.

The Cape May County Department of Health administered a total of 22,148 doses so far. The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 68,284 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 58,548 have been fully vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 66% of the County's population is fully vaccinated.

COVID-19 Update Week of 10/8

Cape May County's Department of Health vaccination program continues to grow with a vaccination rate of 65.2% fully vaccinated residents, and 72.2% having at least one dose as of October 7. This equates to 60,092 people fully vaccinated and 66,689 receiving one dose.

The number of fully vaccinated people in Cape May County increased by 1,910 first dose vaccines over the past week. The numbers of fully vaccinated residents jumped nearly 4% over the past 7 days with an increase of 2,163 fully vaccinated residents to date. The positive test rate is down .25% over last week at 6.17%. The Cape May County Department of Health has administered 22,121 vaccines to date.

The County's Transmission Rate remains under 1.0 at .97, indicating a slower spread of the virus. The County is rated as having a Medium - Average Vulnerability rate, based on age, population and other socio-economic factors, indicating that Cape May County ranks favorable in responding to and recovering from a COVID outbreak, per the NJ Vaccine and Risk Tracker.

Cape May County is approaching the Governor's goal of 70% of residents vaccinated with over 65% of all county residents being fully vaccinated so far.

The Department of Health mobile vaccination clinics continue to operate throughout different locations within the County. Vaccinations are available each Wednesday at the Cape May County Health Department at the Crest Haven Complex in Cape May Court House. The mobile vaccination vehicle is available at the following locations during the upcoming week.

COVID-19 Update Week of 10/1

Cape May County Department of Health continues in its efforts to move forward in managing the COVID-19 vaccination program with 334 more fully vaccinated (two doses) and 1,106 receiving their first vaccine this past week, according to the New Jersey Department of Health Vaccine Tracker.

Cape May County's Infection Rate continues to slow down at .88, marking an ongoing trend in reducing the spread of the virus. The County ranks in the top, with Middlesex County, with the lowest infection rate.

Currently 64.7% of eligible residents have been fully vaccinated with two doses. To date 57,929 people have been fully vaccinated and 64,779 have received on dose. The Cape May County Department of Health has administered 22,087 vaccines to date.

The Department of Health Public Clinic is open on every Wednesday from 1 to 6 for vaccinations. The mobile vaccination unit will be in the following locations this week.

COVID-19 Update Week of 9/24

Cape May County remains among lowest five Counties in the state in new cases and remains in the top four counties of fully vaccinated eligible residents, according to the CDC tracker data. The rate of infection is .98 and under the 1.0 rate indicating a reduction in the spread of the virus.

The rate of fully vaccinated people in Cape May County is 64.3% with 57,595 fully vaccinated and 63,673 having received one dose as of September 24. Vaccinations among those 65 and over, our most vulnerable population, is 60% and ranks within the top four counties in the State.

The vaccination rate in Cape May County continues to climb with nearly 500 vaccines administered over the past week. The Cape May County Department of Health administered a total of 22,031 doses to date.

COVID-19 Update Week of 9/17

The Rate of Transmission (RT) dropped slightly week-over-week in Cape May County. The current RT is .94 currently versus .95 last week, according to the website covidactnow.org. Anytime the RT is below 1.0, it can be said the spread of coronavirus is decreasing.

Cape May County currently ranks fourth among all New Jersey counties for the percentage of the total population that is fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among the most vulnerable portion of the population, 65 years old and older, 85% of the population is fully vaccinated in the County.

COVID-19 Update Week of 9/10

The good news regarding decreasing COVID cases continued this week in Cape May County. The County's Rate of Transmission fell below 1.0 this week for the first time since July 14. When the RT is below 1.0, it can be said the spread of the coronavirus is decreasing. The current RT is 0.95, according to the website covidactnow.org.

County officials are still reminding residents of the importance to protect themselves against the Delta variant and to keep the positive momentum. Vaccination remains the best protection. While the weather remains warm, take advantage of it being safer to socialize outdoors instead of indoors. It is also recommended to mask while indoors and people can't keep six feet of social distance.

The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 62,550 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 56,666 have been fully vaccinated. COVID-19 Update Week of 9/3

Cape May County experienced a drop in COVID-19 cases week-over-week. There was an 11% decrease when comparing new COVID cases reported by the Cape May County Department of Health from August 28 to September 3 compared to August 21 to August 27. There have been less than 40 new cases of COVID-19 reported on four different days this week. The last time there have been four different days in a week with less than 40 cases came between July 31 and August 6.

This reduction in cases correlates with the County's steady decline in the Rate of Infection (RT) over the past month. The RT is currently at 1.05, according to the website of covidactnow.com, which has been decreasing from 1.47 on July 29. If the RT is above 1.0, it can be said that the spread of COVID-19 is increasing. This is the lowest the RT has been since July 15 in the County. To keep up the progress, residents are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated and to wear masks indoors when social distancing is difficult and ventilation not ideal.

Hospitalization data is improving as well. Cape Regional Medical Center reported 18 COVID positive patients on September 2, compared to 20 on August 26. This is also down from 28 individuals who were COVID positive at Cape Regional on August 31^st.

The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 61,997 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 56,250 have been fully vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 63% of the County's population is fully vaccinated. Cape May County is top five among counties in New Jersey for percentage of total population vaccinated.

The Cape May County Department of Health is providing COVID-19 vaccinations in the community weekly. This week, vaccines will be available from 9:30 A.M. to 1 P.M. at the Seaville Fire Co. 36 NJ-50, in Ocean View on Tuesday September 6. Vaccinations are also available every Wednesday at the Cape May County Department of Health building, located at 6 Moore Rd. in Cape May Court House from 1 P.M. to 6 P.M.

COVID-19 Update Week of 8/27

The roll out of the COVID vaccines took another major step forward this week. The Pfizer vaccine for the Coronavirus received full Food and Drug Administration approval after operating under an Emergency Use Authorization. This is the next step in the process and shows an additional layer of safety for these vaccines.

The Rate of Infection (RT) continued to decrease over the past week. If the RT is above 1.0, it can be said that the spread of COVID-19 is increasing. The RT is currently 1.12, which is down from 1.24 one week ago, according to the website covidactnow.com. The RT has been on the decline since July 29 within the County. New daily COVID-19 cases among Cape May County resident have gone up recently. Residents are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated and to wear masks indoors when social distancing is difficult and ventilation not ideal.

The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 61,242 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 55,713 have been fully vaccinated. COVID-19 Update Week of 8/20/21

The Rate of Infection (RT) continues to drop in Cape May County, as the County government continues its renewed push to encourage vaccinations among residents. If the RT is above 1.0, it can be said that the spread of COVID-19 is increasing. The RT is currently 1.22, which is down from 1.39 one week ago, according to the website covidactnow.com. Overall, there has been a decrease in RT since July 29 within the County.

The Cape May County Department of Health administered a total of 21,679 doses so far. The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 60,193 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 54,993 have been fully vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 61% of the County's population is fully vaccinated. Cape May County is top five among counties in New Jersey for percentage of total population vaccinated.

As a result of the County's high vaccination rate, hospitalization remains relatively low. Cape Regional Medical Center had 11 COVID positive patients in the hospital as of Thursday, which is well below the winter highs. COVID-19 Update Week of 8/13/21

Cape May County has begun a renewed push to encourage residents to get vaccinated. Through television, radio and print advertising, the County Board of Commissioners is informing residents of the increased transmissibility of the Delta variant and the need for all eligible residents to get vaccinated.

The Delta variant continues to be the dominate strain of COVID-19. The latest results from the New Jersey Department of Health estimates that 90% of the new coronavirus over a four-week period ending on July 24 were from Delta. The good news is that the Cape May County Rate of Infection (RT) has been decreasing from the high of 1.47 on July 29 to 1.36 currently. Anytime the RT is above 1.0, it can be said that the spread of COVID-19 is increasing. The peak RT for Cape May County was 1.50 in March of 2020.

"Our 'Finish Strong - Safely Together' messaging campaign has been very effective," said Cape May County Commission Director Gerald M. Thornton. "Cape May County is in the top five in terms of number of residents vaccinated, but we still have about 30% of our eligible residents who need to get the vaccine. Each person that gets the vaccine moves Cape May County one step closer to putting covid behind us."

The Cape May County Department of Health is providing COVID-19 vaccinations in the community weekly. COVID-19 Update Week of 8/6/21

For vaccine information on where, when, who, and how, please visit capemaycountynj.gov. The Cape May County Department of Health administered a total of 21,535 doses so far. The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 58,904 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 54,189 have been fully vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 60% of the County's population is fully vaccinated.

As with most of the State of New Jersey and many areas of the Country, the daily case rate of COVID-19 rose in Cape May County over the past week. It appears the more transmissible Delta variant of the COVID virus is within the County population and is likely accounting for many of the new cases. Fortunately, hospitalizations have remained relatively low, with 11 covid positive patients admitted as of Thursday's report.

The attached chart shows the number of daily cases reported over the past ten days, with Cape May County averaging about 20 cases per day. This is well below the numbers from January when the County was averaging approximately 40 new cases per day.

While Cape May County has been reported as having the highest average daily case rate, the actual average number of daily cases in Cape May County remains well below last winter's highs when the pandemic was sometimes averaging 40 cases per day. Among the top ten counties with the highest daily case rate, Cape May County has the second lowest number of total daily cases.

Nevertheless, the County is updating its messaging to residents to continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated but also to remind residents of the mitigation techniques that help to slow the spread such as sanitization, social distancing and wearing masks in indoor settings where social distancing is difficult. To that end, like many private businesses, the County has reinstituted the policy to require members of the public to wear masks when conducting business at indoor County facilities.

"The Cape May County Department of Health continues to monitor the various COVID variants, including the Delta strain that is dominate currently," said Cape May County Commissioner Director Gerald M. Thornton. "We believe these actions are in the best interest of the visitors to our building, along with our employees and follows the recommendations of the CDC. COVID-19 Update - Week of 6/25/21

The Southeast section also includes Atlantic and Cumberland counties, along with Cape May County. The State is reporting 1.35 new cases per 100,000 people in the region, with a 0.74% positivity rate. The latest restriction to be removed in New Jersey is the indoor gathering limit. The indoor gathering limits were at 50 people for private events, and 250 people for political events, weddings, funerals, and memorial services. COVID-19 Update - Week of 5/28/21

The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 53,375 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 47,003 have been fully vaccinated.

Cape May County has recorded yet another record low COVID-19 infection rate. The Rate of Infection (RT) currently is 0.57. This means that on average each individual who tests positive for COVID-19 in Cape May County is infecting 0.57 other people. This means that the numbers of cases in Cape May County is decreasing at this time. This breaks the record low RT of .64, which the County was at last week. Cape May County's positive test rate for COVID-19 is just below 1%. This is the lowest percentage that the County has been at since Oct. 19, 2020. The average number of new cases in Cape May County over the past week has been 5 new cases per day. This is a decrease of more than 70% from one month ago.

The indoor mask mandate has been removed for vaccinated people in most cases in New Jersey as of today. Face coverings will still be required on public transportation, at schools, childcare settings, healthcare centers, and inside of State offices like the Motor Vehicle Commission. This move follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously issued guidance. This comes a week after most indoor capacity limits were eliminated, including at restaurants and bars.

"These restrictions being lifted on our businesses are so important after our residents have done the hard work over the past year to keep COVID cases below the State average and now vaccinating at one of the highest per capita rates in New Jersey," said Cape May County Commissioner Gerald M. Thornton, who also serves as the liaison to the Cape May County Tourism Department. "We are expecting a great summer here in Cape May County as more people continue to get vaccinated daily."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 54% of Cape May County's total population has been fully vaccinated. This also includes 82% of the County's 65-year-old and up population which has been vaccinated. This is the age group most at-risk if they catch COVID to have a serious medical issue.

"We continue to push to reach our vaccination goal and are encouraged that people continue to sign up to get the shot," said Commissioner Jeff Pierson, liaison to the Cape May County Department of Health. "Case numbers continue to plummet as more people receive the vaccine. We will continue provide every person who wants the shot the chance to get it."

The Cape May County Department of Health's vaccine clinic has moved from Avalon Community Hall to the Field House a Lower Cape May Regional High School. The Clinic will be open Monday (except this Monday in observation of Memorial Day), Wednesday, and Friday from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. and anyone who wants the vaccine can walk-in. Also, to help those who can't get in during work hours, the clinic will be open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as from 8 A.M. to 12 Noon on Saturdays.

For the Pfizer vaccine for children aged 12 to 17, residents should go to the mega-site clinic in Atlantic City or contact your local CVS Pharmacy, Walmart, Acme or Walgreens, which may have the Pfizer vaccine. The Johnson & Johnson and Moderna vaccines are available through the Cape May County Department of Health. The Centers for Disease Control recently issued a warning to women aged 50 and younger that a very rare but serious blood clotting side-effect has been seen in a very small number of women after use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and recommends that women in this age group utilize the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.

Governor Lifts Indoor Mask Mandate; County Officials Continue Vaccination Effort

Gov. Phil Murphy announced today that fully vaccinated people will not need to wear masks indoors, except under certain circumstances, beginning on Friday May 28. The latest news follows previous guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This is the latest of many restrictions that have been lifted this month, ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

Cape May County officials have been working hard throughout the pandemic to keep COVID cases as low as possible, while trying to ensure that the County's businesses can fully reopen safely this year. Cape May County has had one of the strongest vaccination programs in the State of New Jersey and now the CDC reports that 64% of the County's adult population is fully vaccinated. The goal is to reach 70% by the end of June.

This is a continuation of efforts that began prior to last summer. Cape May County Commissioner Vice-Director Len Desiderio and Commissioner Will Morey co-chaired the Cape May County Recovery Task Force, which along with business leaders, and local mayors created "A Proposal for the Safe, Thoughtful and Progressive Reopening of Cape May County During the Time of COVID-19," ahead of last summer. The goal was to open local businesses, but in a safe and responsible way. The Task Force also worked with Cape May County Tourism Director Diane Wieland on the "Safely Together" media campaign, which the County continues to use in messaging. It invited visitors to the Jersey Cape, but with reminders of safety protocols.

"Helping businesses during the reopening last year was some of the most important work I have participated in during my time as a County Commissioner," said Desiderio. "We continue to work as a County to safely reopen. We welcome the news relaxing indoor mask mandates ahead of our unofficial start to summer this weekend. We expect a great summer at the Jersey Cape."

The Cape May County Department of Health worked closely on these initiatives, while also adding additional layers of support. They provided COVID-19 testing last year, at a time when testing was tough to access. The Department of Health also created the Social Distancing Ambassador program, at the direction of Cape May County Commissioner Director Gerald Thornton and Commissioner Jeff Pierson, who is the liaison to the County's Department of Health. The Ambassador program gained national attention and promoted safety protocols through positive reinforcement. They distributed thousands of masks to visitors and residents in Cape May County. To assist with vaccinations, they coordinated with Fare Free Transportation, under the direction of Commissioner Marie Hayes, to ensure people that needed rides to the vaccination clinic could receive one. Equally as crucial, has been working with community partners to reach the homebound, homeless, and other hard to reach communities to bring the vaccination to them. The Department of Health also hosted task force calls with municipal and community partners during the entire pandemic to update them on the latest COVID-19 news.

"The leadership from all of the departments and my colleagues on the Commissioner Board during this time has been amazing," said Thornton. "I truly believe that our case numbers have been among the lowest and our vaccination rates have been highest because of the hard work that has been done over the past 15 months. I continue to be in daily communication with the Governor's office to advocate for issues impacting Cape May County as we keep pushing to open Safely Together."

Pandemic Moves Into Very Promising Phase in Cape May County

The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 52,491 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 45,744 have been fully vaccinated.

Cape May County saw its lowest COVID-19 infection rate ever this week as the number stood at 0.64. This means that, on average, each person in Cape May County with COVID-19 is infecting 0.64 other people. Because each person is statistically infecting less than one other person, the total number of current cases in Cape May County can be said to be shrinking. The previous low point was in July of 2020, when the number stood at 0.69. Cape Regional Medical Center reported only 2 covid-positive admissions yesterday, with neither in ICU nor on a ventilator. These are also the lowest numbers since last summer. Cape May County's positive test rate of 1.5% is the lowest in the state and our first-dose vaccination rate of 56.6% is third highest in New Jersey. Over the past two weeks, Cape May County has averaged under 6 new covid cases per day. Just several weeks ago, that number stood at approximately 50 per day.

"It's time for Cape May County to open up 100%," said Cape May County Commissioner Director Gerald M. Thornton. "The people of Cape May County have done the job. We flattened the curve, we isolated, we social distanced, we wore masks and more than half of us have already gotten vaccinated, with more going through every day. It is time for our businesses, schools and churches to get back to normal. We will be sending this message loud and clear to Trenton as summer approaches."

The New Jersey Department of Health reports that 51,167 Cape May County residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 43,981 have been fully vaccinated. Cape May County has consistently led the State in per capita administration of the COVID vaccine.

The Cape May County Department of Health will be moving its vaccination clinic on Monday, May 17^th to the Lower Cape May Regional High School's field house from its Avalon location. Anyone with a second shot location has been informed verbally and via email of the new location for their second shot. The only vaccines that the County Department of Health provides is Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, both of which are only approved currently for individuals 18 years old and older. The Lower Township vaccine site will have availability for walk-in appointments next week on Monday, May 17^th and Friday, May 21^st from 10 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. for individuals who have not yet received their COVID vaccine. Pfizer is allowed for people 12 years old and up, but anyone looking for the Pfizer vaccine must find another location that provides it.

COVID restrictions will become further eased on May 19^th. The general indoor gather limit will increase to 50 people and the outdoor gathering limit will be removed. Also, indoor catered events, including wedding receptions and proms can increase to 100% of the room's capacity, but no more than 250 individuals. Percentage-based indoor and outdoor capacity limits will be removed for businesses and houses of worship, and instead, they must limit indoor and outdoor capacity to a number that ensures all individuals or groups of people can remain six feet apart. Also, indoor interstate youth sports competitions will be able to resume.

Cape May County is currently at 57% of its adult population being fully vaccinated. The CDC reports that 80% of the County's 65 years of age and older population is fully vaccinated. This is important news because 8 out of ten COVID-19 deaths have taken place in individuals who are 65 years old and older, according to the Centers for Disease of Control and Prevention. The high vaccination rate has helped the County's new COVID cases drop. The Rate of Transmission (RT) in Cape May County .76, according to covidactnow.com. Any number below 1.0 means the spread of the virus is decreasing currently. Cases were down in Cape May County 52% week-over-week when comparing cases from May 8 to May 14. Statewide numbers are also improving. Thursday marked the first time in 7 months that hospitalizations in New Jersey fell below 1,000. Hospitalizations in the State is down over 33% in the past week and nearly 70% in the past month. The Statewide RT is .84.

The region has also seen a significant drop in new cases and percent positivity of COVID tests. The new COVID-19 Statewide Activity Level Report shows the entire State and the Southeast region, where Cape May County is located, is at moderate risk. The new case rate in the Southeast, which also includes Atlantic and Cumberland counties, is at 10.67 per 100,000 residents with a 3.31% positivity rate. New cases were down 35% and the percent positivity dropped by nearly half week-over-week. The Activity Level Report helps schools make determinations on safety protocols to take due to COVID-19. The report has shown the Southeast region moving towards decreased risk over the past month.
